Good afternoon, friends and neighbours.
I am not new to writing online. When the Internet was in its infancy, I had a semi-popular blog (and, let’s not kid ourselves - this is a blog), where I wrote little anecdotes and stories from my life, little shards of madness, in a voice that I thought was fun and informative.
Well, it sort of took off and I made a whole lot of friends from that little project and it gave me the courage to try writing in more legacy mediums. For actual money. I published in my university newspaper (embarrassing, silly pieces that nevertheless got people talking), wrote in some local publications, even tried my hand at some professional work that wasn’t meant for widespread publication.
Well, life being what it is, and writing not being the thing I chose to do with my life professionally, those projects were cast aside eventually and promises were made to keep writing.
These are promises I have not kept. Really, who has the time anymore to do something that isn’t monetized? I can’t spend too much time on something that doesn’t pay. I have mortgages to pay and mouths to feed.
So why am I back? I’m not getting younger, a fact that doesn’t really dawn on you until you’re in the thick of middle age, when joints creak and your parent’s generation becomes frail and unmoored. I’m not getting any younger, but I have a lot to say. I have a lot to write that I think is valuable or, at the very least, entertaining.
And if I’m going to do that, I might as well take a shot at getting be paid for my time.
So here I am. On yet another platform, one that allows for some compensation for time. Will it go anywhere? I don’t know, we’ll see. But I’m here.
What shall I talk about? I don’t know if I can say exactly. My interests are widespread: food, economics, bicycling, statistics, books, movies, politics, funny little stories, history, my family. Let’s see where it goes.
Welcome. Please enjoy your stay.
